Babyís First Eye Exam

jax Unlike many other sensory systems, the visual system of your baby develops largely after birth, especially in the first few years of life. At birth, visual structures are fully present yet not fully developed.

By age 6 months, your infantís visual system, although not fully developed, can be evaluated by Dr. Shepard. Through her participation in the InfantSEE program, Dr. Shepard will provide a comprehensive eye assessment for infants between 6 and 12 months as a no-cost public service.

Regular Comprehensive Eye Exams Are Important
Approximately 80% of what a child learns is through their eyes.  Infants and children experience a variety of eye problems, many quite distinct from adult eye conditions and should have regular eye exams on the following schedule, unless conditions necessitate an evaluation more frequently:
  • 6-12 months of age
  • 3 years of age
  • Before entering school and every year thereafter
